Cobol technical demonstration -
i'm working cobol programmer - have 6 months work experience - consulting firm . today, rest cobol "department", had meeting new director of company.
after initial analysis made new team in charge, noticed that, comparing other services/technologies our company has offer - java, c++, objective-c, etc - cobol lacking "advertisement". stated whenever members of other teams in-between projects implement small demos can shown our clients whenever there presentation of our company. gave examples of widgets mobile devices in objective-c, cool web-pages html5, etc. , noticed there nothing in cobol that. wants develop kind of tool/app show our competences.
we told him cobol used under hood, , doesn't have bells , whistles show. when hiring cobol programmer/analyst important client shows has "business logic" knowledge.
i know coding part important after 2 weeks introduction mainframe environment , cobol capable of doing programming tasks easily. 6 months experience working in bank find myself having to, everyday, ask questions regarding "business logic" "gurus" don't end changing logic of process when performing maintenance task.
can make (tool/app) shows or future clients have different offer other company's provide same services? or if not, there can our manager understands cobol different other languages , it's purpose not display pretty graphics on screen.
thank you!
i think you're absolutely right - "curly brace" languages have had lot of marketing of brand ibm , oracle/sun , microsoft on last 20 years.
micro focus trying this. relaunched www.cobol.com includes nice set of video testimonial power of cobol.
there's great video available showing of demos micro focus built part of development of released "visual cobol r3" product. these demos include web services, rich browser-based clients, parallel processing , more (they aren't shown in video). micro focus shortly launching new resources cobol developers include these samples.
