unit testing - How to test for situation where a specific library is missing in Python -

i have packages have soft dependencies on other packages fall default (simple) implementation.

the problem hard test using unit tests. set separate virtual environments, hard manage.

is there package or way achieve following: have

import x

work usual, but

hide_package('x') import x

will raise importerror.

i keep having bugs creep fall-back part of code because hard test this.

it looks bit dirty, can override __import__ builtin:

save_import = __builtin__.__import__ def my_import(name, *rest):     if name=="hidden":         raise importerror, "hidden package"     return save_import(name, *rest) __builtin__.__import__ = my_import

btw, have read pep 302? seems can make more robust mechanism import hooks.
